News from the Farm:

I spoke last week of reports of losses at local farms, and this week has confirmed those reports. At the West Bend farmers' market, which we attend on Saturdays, we were one of the few produce sellers who made it; there were many empty spots.  At the South Shore Market in Milwaukee, reports the Journal Sentinel, nine of the market's fourteen produce vendors did not show up on Saturday.  The same Journal article highlighted the plight of our friends Dave Kozlowski and Sandy Raduenz of Pinehold Gardens.  Half the fields of Pinehold went under water, as they were inundated with nearly 13 inches of rain in four days.  Dave offered this patient wisdom, gleaned from his many years of farming:  "Farmers are both optimists and pessimists.  We have great faith in the simple act of planting a seed, while expecting nature to ceaselessly test this faith.  most of the time our faith is rewarded.  Sometimes nature wins."

Nature has been testing us at Wellspring this past week.  The string of beautiful, dry days did much to dry out the fields and we managed to reclaim large portions from the weeds, but just as we planned our biggest push, it rained again and the muck has returned.  On top of that the mosquitoes have arrived, making work quite uncomfortable.  If you plan a visit to the farm in the coming weeks--especially if you're coming to work as a community or worker shareholder--be sure to bring bug spray, or at least long pants and shirt.  You'll be glad you did!

See the fascinating story of another local farmer here, interviewed by communitarian and Wellspring Board member James Godsil.  Enjoy your vegetables.
